Cost effective

We constantly benchmark our prices to offer best value Sound Insulation Testing services.

How it works

Our specialists will assess your plans to make sure they are compliant with the necessary building regulations for sound insulation.

You prepare the building for the test (see below).

We conduct the airborne sound test by placing a speaker in the source room which produces a very high sound. The level difference is recorded in a chosen receiving room through the party wall.

An impact sound test is performed by placing a tapping machine on the upper floor room and then measuring the sound pressure level in the room below.

Both level differences are standardised to a reference value and the results compared to a performance standard.

We supply all documents to meet your deadlines.

Sound Insulation Testing is required on all new build (providing robust details haven’t been adopted) and converted dwellings that have separating walls or floors. The requirement is driven by Part E of Building Regulations and is to ensure that suitable sound insulation has been installed.

There are two types of sound tests:

Airborne Tests – which are carried out on separating walls

Impact Tests  – which are carried out on separating floors

Tests should be carried out as early as possible because issues can potentially be more difficult and costly to resolve the more progressed the build is. It is advisable to carry out tests before kitchens and bathrooms are installed. However, all doors and windows need to be fitted, all walls and ceilings should be plastered, there should be no holes or cracks in walls/floors/ceilings and there needs to be power available to all rooms.

The building should be at a point of near completion with no holes in the floor or walls. Even a pin hole size hole can allow sound to travel through and result in a failed test. Anywhere where there is sound insulation it should be installed correctly to avoid flanking noise and causing tests to fail.

Pricing will vary depending on size and complexity of the project.

We will always help as much as we can to ensure your project passes.

We also provide Air Testing and Ventilation Testing.

External noise should be controlled e.g. no heavy plant, disc cutters etc operating in the vicinity.

No work within in the block where testing is to be carried out; e.g. carpentry, carpet fitting etc.

Units to be complete, with:

  • Windows Fitted
  • Doors Fitted
  • Trickle Vents Fitted
  • 240v Electrical Supply
  • Units Empty of Rubbish or Materials
  • Floor – Carpets or floor finishes should NOT be fitted if the floor construction is a Type 2, as defined in Approved Document E of the Building Regulations 2000. A Type 2 floor incorporates a resilient layer within the construction.
